Documentation

MarkdownWizard is a Markdown editor and document converter that runs entirely in your browser. Write on the left, watch it render on the right, then download the result in the format the moment calls for. Nothing you type is ever uploaded.

Getting started

  1. Open the editor. It starts with a sample document so you can see what rendering looks like — select all and start typing to replace it.
  2. Type or paste Markdown into the left pane. The preview updates as you type.
  3. Give the document a name in the title box at the top. That name becomes the file name of anything you download.
  4. Choose Download and pick a format.

To work on a file you already have, use Open… and pick a .md,.markdown, .mdown, .txt, or .text file. It is read in your browser; it is not uploaded.

The editor

On a narrow screen the panes stack vertically instead of sitting side by side, and the toolbar scrolls horizontally.

Download formats

Every format is generated in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere to be converted.

FormatBest for
PDF .pdfSharing or printing. A real vector PDF with selectable text, not an image.
Word .docxWord, Google Docs, and LibreOffice. Genuine OOXML, with images embedded.
Word 97–2003 .docOlder Word versions that will not open .docx.
Word template .dotOpening in Word as a document template.
Rich Text .rtfNearly every word processor ever made.
Plain text .txtFormatting flattened to readable text.
Web page .htmlA self-contained styled page you can open in any browser.
Markdown .mdThe raw source, exactly as written.

The same menu also offers Print…, which opens your system print dialog — choosing “Save as PDF” there renders through the browser's own engine, which is the best fidelity available if a generated PDF is not quite what you wanted. Copy rich textputs the formatted document on your clipboard for pasting straight into Gmail, Word, or Docs, andCopy HTML source copies the rendered markup.

Autosave

Your document autosaves to this browser as you type, so reloading the page does not lose your work. It is stored in the browser's local storage on your own device — never on a server — under keys beginning mdw:.

Two things to know. New empties the editor and the autosaved copy with it, which is why it asks first. And because the copy lives in one browser on one device, it does not follow you to another browser, another machine, or a private window — download anything you need to keep.

Working offline

The editor keeps working after the page has loaded, with no network connection. The one thing that needs a connection is a remote image referenced by your Markdown, which the preview fetches from wherever you pointed it.

Privacy

There is no server, no account, and no upload. What you type stays in the browser tab. ThePrivacy Policy sets out exactly what the hosted site does and does not see, including the single case in which using the editor causes a request to leave your device.
